Hospital Center Cancer Institute
Since 1992, we have been both a regional leader and national
model for comprehensive, integrated, interdisciplinary and
patient-focused diagnosis and treatment. WCI's commitment
to provide clinical research trials and to retain internationally
renowned oncologists enhances its mission to meet the emotional,
spiritual and informational needs of the Washington community.
Washington Hospital Center's Cancer Program, designated
by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACOS)
as a "teaching hospital cancer program", received a full,
three-year approval in 2006 from ACOS.
Washington Cancer Institute is composed of medical, surgical
and radiation oncology specialty departments, along with 10
tumor site-specific interdisciplinary centers and a comprehensive
pain center. Each inter-disciplinary center includes a medical
director, nurse coordinator, medical, surgical and radiation
oncologists and diagnostic radiologists and pathologists with
special expertise in the tumor type. Last year WCI diagnosed
over 2,500 new cancer cases and managed nearly 90,000 outpatient
cancer visits of which 15,000 were for breast cancer.
The District of Columbia has the highest rate of cancer
per capita in the United States. To maintain its position
as the region's principal cancer program and to meet the increasing
health needs of the community it serves, Washington Cancer
Institute depends upon the generosity of its most committed
donors.
